Live Here

Everyday life around Panama City Beach

A vacation week and an ordinary week here are two different things. Living here means knowing your stretch of the beach, where the everyday errands are, how the bridges and main roads tie the county together, how the seasons change the pace, and which city or community you call home.

Communities

The lay of the land

Panama City Beach is only one part of Bay County. Panama City, St. Andrews, Lynn Haven, Callaway and Mexico Beach are distinct places, and the west end, Front Beach, Grand Lagoon and other parts of PCB can feel very different from one another.

Bay County

Panama City Beach is home base, and each of its neighbors has a character of its own.

PCB neighborhoods

Planned and gated communities in and around Panama City Beach, each with its own setting.

South Walton and 30A

Across the county line in Walton County, along Scenic 30A.

Destin

Okaloosa County, built around its harbor, and a real drive from Pier Park.

The Forgotten Coast

East of the bay. Mexico Beach is still in Bay County; Port St. Joe and Apalachicola are in Gulf and Franklin counties.

Errands

Where the ordinary errands are

Front Beach Road is convenient for restaurants, beach gear, and plenty of vacation-week needs. For larger grocery, pharmacy, home, and hardware runs, Panama City Beach Parkway/US 98 and the Pier Park North area become much more important. Some errands and major services take you across the Hathaway Bridge into Panama City.

West-end and Laguna Beach errands often stay on the Highway 98 side near Breakfast Point rather than driving the tower miles. East-end and Grand Lagoon errands can start on Thomas Drive and move to the same parkway when the list gets long. Weekday afternoons bring steady traffic on the Hathaway Bridge.

Which end

Low dunes and houses on the west end

Different parts of the beach

Laguna Beach and the west end are lower-rise stretches, residential streets, and coastal dune lakes, with Lake Powell and Camp Helen nearby. Carillon Beach is the gated village on that end of the Gulf. Celadon is a Gulf-front condominium on the west end.

Front Beach is the condo and resort corridor, with restaurants, attractions, and visitor traffic. Grand Panama sits in the middle of that corridor. Pier Park is the shopping, dining, entertainment, and events center across from the City Pier, and living next to it means busy sidewalks. Pier Park West is a separate retail strip on the parkway. Edgewater, east of Pier Park, is the resort and the Shoppes at Edgewater.

Grand Lagoon and Thomas Drive are boating, marinas, restaurants, and the way to St. Andrews State Park. Shores of Panama is a Gulf-front place to stay on that east-end drive. Breakfast Point is an inland planned community off Highway 98, with sidewalks, parks, and Breakfast Point Academy in the community.

On the bay side, Panama City, St. Andrews, and Lynn Haven each keep their own pace. Mexico Beach, east of Panama City, is a separate small city, still in Bay County.

The year

The year around the beach

Panama City Beach changes through the year. Spring break, summer vacation weeks, fall events, and winter each affect traffic, restaurants, lodging, and the pace around the beach. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. When a storm threatens, Bay County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, and the cities are the sources to follow, not social media.

Festivals and events, with this year’s dates, are on This Week.
