Destin is the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village," an Okaloosa County city built around a harbor that sits closer to deep Gulf water than any other in Florida.

The harbor town in Okaloosa County.
Captain Leonard Destin, a fisherman from New London, Connecticut, settled here around 1850. When the post office came in 1896, the town took his name. Before that, the spot was simply called East Pass. Destin incorporated as a city in 1984.
East Pass is Choctawhatchee Bay's only outlet to the Gulf. The city says its harbor lies closer to the 100-fathom curve than any other spot in Florida, so charter boats reach deep water quickly. That's why Destin has one of the largest fishing fleets in the state. The "luckiest fishing village" name became official in 1956.
Crab Island is the sandbar just inside the pass, and you can only reach it by boat. The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs every October 1–31, with free daily weigh-ins on the harbor. The Destin History & Fishing Museum tells the story of the early fishing families.
Henderson Beach State Park sits on the east side of town. Day-use entry there now needs a reservation, so book on the Florida State Parks site before you go.
Destin is about an hour west of Pier Park on US 98, through South Walton.
