Cape San Blas

Cape San Blas is the elbow of Gulf County's St. Joseph Peninsula, with the Gulf on one side, St. Joseph Bay on the other and a state park at the tip.

The shore at Cape San Blas

A Gulf County peninsula on St. Joseph Bay.

The cape bends north into the St. Joseph Peninsula, a thin strip of dunes that wraps around St. Joseph Bay. Most of it is beach houses on stilts, and you won't find high-rises anywhere.

The state park

T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park covers about 2,700 acres at the north end, with 10 miles of white-sand beach and a wilderness preserve. In 2002, coastal scientist Dr. Stephen Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach, ranked it the No. 1 beach in America. Check the park page for current hours and camping.

The lighthouse

The Cape San Blas Lighthouse, an iron skeleton tower from 1885, stood on the eroding cape until July 2014. That year it was moved 12.3 miles to George Core Park in Port St. Joe, along with its two keepers' houses and oil house, and you can visit it there.

On the bay

Salinas Park has a bayside boardwalk, a playground and restrooms on Cape San Blas Road. St. Joseph Bay is known for its summer scallop season, but the state closed the Gulf County zone for 2026 after a survey found too few scallops.

Getting there

Take US 98 east past Mexico Beach to Port St. Joe, then follow C-30A and Cape San Blas Road. Port St. Joe and the cape are on Eastern time, an hour ahead of Bay County.
